Car bombs, fuel riots usher in New Year in Iraq

January. 1, 06

BAGHDAD - Fuel riots and more than a dozen car bombs greeted the New Year in Iraq as relatives celebrated the release of one Cypriot, one Lebanese and five Sudanese hostages by their captors.

At least 40 people were wounded in the wave of bombings, which struck the tense northern oil city of Kirkuk and towns just north of the capital as well as Baghdad itself, security officials said.

Insurgents also shot dead a policeman in the main northern city of Mosul and wounded two more in a roadside bombing to its east.

An official of the Assyrian Democratic Movement was killed by gunmen in the south Baghdad neighbourhood of Dura, the Christian political party said.

Another Assyrian was killed today in the Raheem Awa quarters in Kirkuk, where Assyrians and Kurds live, While going home from work Youkhana Yaqo Youkhana (born in 1936 in the Assyrian village of Deri) was killed by mistake by American troops who were shooting to clear up a demonstartion protesting the high prices of fuel.
Youkhana Yaqo is the father of Emad Youkhana, a member of the Assyrian Democratic Movement.

Gunmen also killed two worshippers and wounded five as they left the Sunni Hodhaifa mosque after evening prayers.

And further south, in the confessionally mixed town of Mahmudiyah, a Shiite cleric belonging to the radical movement of Moqtada Sadr was shot dead by suspected Sunni Arab insurgents.

The US military confirmed a soldier had been killed in a New Year's Eve mortar attack in south Baghdad, bringing its losses for 2005 to at least 844, according to the Iraq Coalition Casualty Count, a non-profit organisation that tracks the dead and wounded.

The death toll was very slightly down on the 848 recorded in 2004.

More than 30 soldiers from other coalition countries also died in Iraq in 20
