Paris approves Armenian genocide bill

The French parliament, which officially recognized the Armenian genocide in 2001 despite warnings from certain countries, approved a bill penalizing denial of the genocide with fines and imprisonment on Oct. 12. The bill, enacted at a time when the European Union pressured Turkey to modify Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, received criticism from European authorities, French intellectuals and historians. The French Senate is yet to approve the bill. Aside from the Armenian genocide, the European Parliament also mentioned Pontus and Assyrian genocides in a report released on Sept. 27. The Netherlands removed certain Turkish-Dutch candidates from electoral lists on grounds that they denied the genocide.
