Iraqi Americans react to death of Saddam Hussein

December 30, 2006 - Around the country Iraqi Americans celebrated Saddam Hussein's hanging Friday night along with that of his half brother, Barzan Ibrahim. In Chicago though, the reaction was more muted. Some of it coming during a fundraiser by the Assyrian National Council in Skokie.
This was the scene in Detroit Friday night as Iraqi Americans celebrated the execution of Saddam Hussein. in Chicago, there was no public cheering. More a sense of relief.
"This is overdue two to three years. I thought that he should have been executed on the spot," said Northeastern University's Edward Odisho."I am delighted because I feel that this should be a new Iraq emerging after that dictatorial regime."
Odisho is one of the hundreds of thousands of people imprisoned by Saddam's regime. His son, captain Fred Odisho served in the U.S. army and spent a year fighting in Iraq, and his view is somewhat different.
"Personally I don't think it will make much difference," said Fred Odisho. "Getting food on the table, getting clean water, finding a job, those are the things that are missing in Iraq."
Still, at a meeting of the Assyrian National Council of Illinois last night, members said the execution of Saddam was a good thing. But they remain concerned for family members who are still there, struggling to survive the sectarian violence that followed Saddam's downfall.
"I believe it's the Iraqi people's decision and I respect it. I feel justice has been done," said Emma Mulhim of the Assyrian National Council.
"I believe the violence needs to end, Iraq needs to go to the peace, the Iraqi children need to grow up in peace and love," said Council President Sheba Mando.
"It's difficult to predict but I hope Iraqis will accept the judgment and it will be benefiting," said the Council's Waleeta Canon
