Iraq's jailed former deputy PM Aziz gets family call for Christmas (AFP) 28 December 2005 BAGHDAD - Iraq's jailed former deputy prime minister, Tariq Aziz, got a phone call from his family on Christmas Day, his lawyer told AFP on Wednesday. "He was able to talk for 15 minutes with his wife, daughter and son," said Badie Izzat Aref who visited his client on Tuesday. Aziz, 69, who was both deputy prime minister and foreign minister under ousted dictator Saddam Hussein, is an Assyrian of the Chaldean Church. Aref said Aziz was in "good health" and "good spirit", but "has lost a lot of weight" since he surrendered to US forces more than two years ago. His treatment by US forces "has much improved" and he was hoping to be allowed a visit from his family who live in Jordan "in the next few days", his lawyer said. "I'm optimistic he will be freed," Aref also said, adding that a judge investigating crimes committed by the former regime had found nothing against his client. "I'm sure (the judge) will order his release as he has found nothing against him," he said. ----
