UC Berkeley Course "Assyrians, the Forgotten Ones" 1/24/2006 By AssyriaTimes Staff Writer Two Assyrian senior students at UC Berkeley, Ramsen Goriel, a political science major, and Hala Samow, an English major will facilitate a two unit course of Democratic Education at CAL (de-cal) program for UC Berkeley students. The Class will start on Wednesday, January 25th, 2006 from 6:00-8:00 pm.   De-Cal program is designed for Berkeley students to teach a course on a topic in a regular two unit course. The class will be taught through Berkeley's Political Science department under sponsorship of Professor Darren Zook.   Ramsen and Hala will offer Berkeley students an in depth historical, political, and religious study of the Assyrians in the Middle East. The course will consist of three parts: I ­ Assyrians up until the coming of Christianity II ­ The Assyrian experience of the past two millennia such as the coming of Islam, the process of sovereignty and assimilation, the Mongolian and Ottoman invasions. III ­ The Assyrian experience in the modern Middle East: the genocide of 1915, the British mandate after WWI, the Baathist revolution, the Iranian revolution of 1979, the Iran-Iraq war, and the two Persian Gulf wars of 1991 and 2003. Aside from the opportunity to teach, learn, and share valuable information about Assyrians' history from ancient, classical, and modern times, Ramsen and Hala's purpose is to deviate the misconceptions about the Assyrians, and help the students form awareness on who the Assyrians are, recognize their contribution to modern civilization, and examine the ramifications of politics all through history up until the present day. The course will consist of documentaries, lectures, and some prominent Assyrian guest speakers.
