Dutch Assyrian MP Raises Issue of Assyrians in North Iraq May 17, 06 http://www.aina.org/bbs/ (AINA) -- Following her 8-day trip to northern Iraq, Dutch politician Attiya Gamri (PvdA) met the PvdA EU parliament member in Brussels, Mr. J.M Wiersema, concerning the situation of the Assyrians in Iraq. Reporting on the unfavorable situation of the Assyrians, Shabaks and Yezidis in northern Iraq, Ms. Gamri highlighted the economic, ethnic and religious discrimination, land seizures, and inequitable development facing Assyrians. Mr. Wiersema promised to take this question up in the commission for Human Rights in the EU parliament. He also asked for more information about the reconstruction money the EU community sent to Iraq and will try to put more pressure on the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). Ms Gamri told the EU member that the Assyrians are afraid to talk about their situation and that the KDP are employing the same policy as Saddam's Ba'ath Party, appointing Assyrians who are KDP members to represent the community in the Kurdistan regional parliament and excluding representatives from the Assyrian Democratic Movement (ADM), the main Assyrian political party. This despite the fact that ADM received the most Assyrian votes in the January elections. Mr. Wiersma will report about the current situation of the Assyrians in Iraq to the European Labour Party and will ask for more attention to be paid to human rights in northern Iraq. He promised Ms. Gamri also to follow the resolution the EU parliament took in April 2006.   Kerimo Demands UN Supervised Zone for Iraqi Christians May 17, 06 Yilmaz Kerimo (Social Democrat from Sweden) Demands a Free Zone under the Supervision of the United Nations for the Christian Assyrians/Syriacs/Chaldeans. Muslims in Iraq are attacking the Christian Assyrians/Syriacs/Chaldeans in retaliation for United State?s war in that country. These acts of terror assault many innocent children, women and elderlies. Christian churches are bombed without discernment. The reactions to the drawings of Mohammed in the past few days have heightened the situation and the security of the Christian groups is very unstable. It is now time for the international community to act to protect these threatened people. The only reasonable way to protect them today is to create a free zone under the supervision of the UN in the same way the Kurds have it today. It is more important to offer this to the Christian Assyrians/Syriacs/Chaldeans with regard to their acts of conscience with peaceful methods. Other groups have attained their goals with violence. In accordance with this argument, Yilmaz Kerimo asks Laila Freivalds (Swedish Foreign Minister) for the creation of a free zone in Iraq for Assyrians/Syriacs/Chaldeans under the supervision of the U.N. The social Democratic party in Sweden is the country's largest party and is the current governing political group.
